Stand Up Paddle Lessons

Summer 2016 Schedule

Fredericksburg SUP is taking the summer off for 2016 (read why here). There are a couple of places in town that we recommend, however, for learning how to stand up paddle and for renting equipment.

River Rock Outfitter

River Rock Outfitter is a core, local outdoor gear store in downtown Fredericksburg. They sell everything from camping and climbing equipment to outerwear and footwear. They also have a decent selection of SUP boards and kayaks. You can visit them online at http://riverrockoutfitter.com or drop by their shop at 915 Sophia Street. You can also call ahead at (540) 372-8708.

Virginia Outdoor Center

The Virginia Outdoor Center provides river trips and outdoor instruction, as well as canoe, kayak and SUP equipment rental. You can visit them online at http://playva.com. They are located at 3219 Fall Hill Avenue, but also set up a rental concession on weekends in the summer at City Dock Park. You can call them by phone at (540) 371-5085 or email voc@playva.com for more info.

Although Fredericksburg SUP is not teaching lessons this summer, if you have further questions, feel free to call or email. You can also visit the FXBG SUP Facebook Group to connect with other stand up paddleboarders in the area.

What To Bring To A SUP Lesson

If you're planning for a lesson, here are some things you'll want to consider bringing in order to make sure that you have the best time possible:

  • Water
  • Snack
  • Sun hat
  • Sunblock (SPF 30 or above)
  • Sunglasses (polarized are best)
  • Water shoes or sport sandals

There are also a few optional items that you'll maybe want to consider:

  • Hydration pack (e.g., Camelbak)
  • Sunglasses strap
  • Waterproof camera
  • Bug spray
  • Towel and dry clothes

In addition, if you wear glasses or have anything else that could fall in the water, it's a good idea to make sure you have a way to keep them on you.

Every instructor has their own teaching style, so make sure that you find out from them if there are any specifics that they would like you to bring!

Where To Stand Up Paddle In Fredericksburg

The main place to stand up paddle in Fredericksburg is City Dock Park, which is located downtown. The park usually has adequate parking close to the water, and the boat ramps provide easy and safe water access. Make sure you check the tide and river current before you go.

Another good location in the area is Abel Lake, which is located in Stafford. The lake is 2.5 miles long, which makes for a good 5-mile down to the end and back trip with good views and occasionally some interesting wildlife. The parking lot is a little hard to find if you've never been there, and make sure to wrap up by dark as it's a little secluded.
